Abstract: The fifth-generation (5G) communication systems is a revolutionary design compared to existing communication systems. It is expected that 5G systems will provide new services and functionalities, such as internet-of-everything (IoE), cloud-based architectural applications, etc. These envisioned services pose challenging requirements for 5G wireless communication systems, such as superfast data rates, long network lifetime, ultralow latency (1 ms for a roundtrip latency), and ubiquitous communication services. Hence, various disruptive technologies, e.g. energy harvesting communication, wireless-powered communications, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication, etc., have been proposed to potentially address the requirements. In this talk, we will discuss the challenges and recent research enabling 5G communication networks. Then, we will investigate the implications of UAV on the design of wireless communication systems with special emphasis on the resource allocation design for realizing secure UAV-based communications.
Bio:

Derrick Wing Kwan Ng received the bachelor’s degree with first-class honours and the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in electronic engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2006 and 2008, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2012. He was a senior postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Digital Communications, FAU, Germany. He is now working as a Senior Lecturer and an ARC DECRA Research Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Dr. Ng received the Best 7 Paper Awards including ICC 2016, Globecom 2012, WCNC 2012.   He has been serving as an editorial assistant to the Editor-In-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Communications since Jan. 2012. In addition, he is listed as a 2018, 2019 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics.
